The Academy Award nominations were announced yesterday, with The Wrestler garnering nods for Best Actor and Supporting Actress. Lost in The Wrestler’s wake was the highly regarded “How To Pin Hulk Hogan,” the instructional wrestling video hosted by former WWF star, The Ultimate Warrior.
The film, considered a sleeper by many Hollywood insiders, did not receive a single nomination.
The Writer/Director/Star/Warrior, Ultimate Warrior, lashed out when told his masterpiece was overlooked in favor of another wrestling-centric film.
“I will avenge you, Mickey Rourke,” growled Warrior when reporter ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund asked him what he thought of the snub. “Look at me. For I am the chosen one. You’ll find out if you have what it takes to survive at the Royal Rumble.”
“How to Pin Hulk Hogan” showcased the former Intercontinental Champion’s acting abilities and variety of ways to escape a sleeper hold. It also showed a tender side of the Warrior through his love-hate relationship with Jake “The Snake” Roberts.
Many critics felt that the star should have been recognized for his performance.
“I loved it,” wrote A.O. Scott in his extremely positive New York Times review. “The story’s a bit of a whirl, but in end you can’t help but rooting for The Ultimate Warrior. I also learned how to build up speed when bouncing off of ropes.”
